Choir Competition
Each year, Midreshet HaRova participates in the Kol Chatan v'Kol Kallah Annual Inter-Seminary Choir Competition benefiting underprivileged women in Israel. The event, which takes place several months into the seminary year, is sponsored by the Kedma organization and Yeshiva University, pits over fifteen participating seminaries against each other, each vying for the coveted first place prize. In the second year of the competition, 2007 - 5767 our students placed a very close second.
A review of the 2008 - 5768 competition:
The Midreshet Harova Choir shined brightly on the night of the choir
competition. The competition began and ended on a high note, with the
performances of over a dozen seminaries filling the hall. The girls
prepared months in advance for the event, and spent practices choosing
the song, learning it, and putting it together. "We always got
to take a break in the middle of a day, 30 of us, and just sing, laugh,
and get to know each other. It was such a fun experience", said
one of the choir members in praise of rehearsals. The song decided
upon was a spiritual "Holy Temple" medley, including well-known
selections from the Yom Kippur davening "Mareh Cohen", "Vehaviotim",
and the enchanting "Bircat Cohanim" niggun. The
girls showed up at the competition wearing all white, singing and dancing
to "Hashiveinu Hashem Eilecha Vinashuva Chadesh Yameinu
Kikedem". The Ruach exhibited was indescribable and it became
no less when they got up on stage. A painting of the Beit Hamikdash
was held up in the background, and two girls, dressed as cherubim all
in gold guarded the two sides of the stage. Fans wore special t-shirts
with the Cohen's choshen on the front. The song was unique and filled
with energy; it was peppered with haunting and upbeat melodies, the
blast of a shofar, a dancing Cohen Gadol, and colored lights. All
the work paid off when Midreshet HaRova placed third in the competition!
The members still love the song and remember fondly the incredible
energy and ruach at the performance and the rehearsals, and they never
fail to break out into song.
